474. ART MEETING

474.In our art meeting, we are visiting the exhibition of German painter, printmaker and sculptor Georg Baselitz, one of the leading names of contemporary art, at the Sakip Sabancı Museum.

Baselitz, who has had a profound influence on the international art world since 1980, will be the 20th. In the second half of the century, he shaped a new identity for German art; in response to the trauma and tragedy of the Second World War, he developed a unique and distinctive artistic style. For the artist, who has been painting his compositions upside down since 1969, this approach has been a way to Deconstruct the form from content and stand somewhere between abstraction and figuration. At the same time, it made it possible for him to make a new opening in the traditional technique of painting on canvas.

Georg Baselitz: The Last Decade consists of stable motives that have become evident in the artist's work over the years. Baselitz's eagles, which have been covered in various techniques since the 1950s and remind of his childhood spent at Deutschbaselitz, return in a series embroidered on blue backgrounds. The last painting of the series dated 2024 meets the visitor for the first time in this exhibition. In the same way, the deer motif, which he has been painting since childhood, reappears as part of the mythological iconography that has guided his works since the beginning of his career. While the Golden Hands series reflects the artist's admiration for the cultural and historical symbolism of these limbs, the upside-down portraits of his wife Elke are also included in the exhibition as one of his frequent subjects since the 1970s. The highlight of the exhibition, the Springtime [Spring] series, is inspired by the Dada collage artist Hannah Höch. In this series, Baselitz reveals an almost fetishistic meaning by collaging real nylon stockings over his upside-down figures. The monumental sculptures exhibited in the galleries and garden of the museum also form a unity with the iconography and historical themes of the paintings. We are visiting the exhibition accompanied by the museum's guide.
