ART MEETING

477.During our art meeting, we are visiting the exhibition "Taviloglu Collection: A Collector's Story", which consists of works accumulated by collector Mustafa Taviloglu for more than 50 years, at the Istanbul Feshane.

Mustafa Taviloglu's collection, “A Collector's Story”, which has been created with great passion and dedication since 1972, met the audience at seven different venues in Istanbul. The collection, which spans seven important places on the cultural and artistic map of Istanbul such as Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum, Artİstanbul Feshane, Istanbul Sanat, Gazhane Museum, Liquor Factory, Eyüpsultan Gallery and Iş Sanat Kibele Art Gallery, includes 2412 works by 903 artists.

The 52-year-old collection, curatorial arrangements of which were made by Derya Yücel and Marcus Graf, includes works by Bedri R from Hodja Ali Rıza to Osman Hamdi, Halil Pasha to Süleyman Seyyid, Fikret Mualla to Ibrahim Çallı. In addition to the works of dozens of famous Turkish artists, from Eyüboğlu to Cihat Burak, Komet, Mehmet Güleryüz and Burhan Doğançay, the works of many foreign artists are also included. Offering a wide range of artists, periods, styles, techniques and psychics with a variety of mediums, it is also possible to see the current works of young artists who have been included in the collection in recent years.

Turkish artists make up 81 percent of the 52-year-old collection, which started with Necdet Kalay's work “Köy Evi” in 1972. The artist of the 2112 works in the collection was born in Turkey. Mustafa Taviloglu started buying the works of foreign artists in 2010, in his own words, at a late period. Foreign artists make up 19 percent of the collection. Painting stands out with 1740 works in the collection. While this figure constitutes 71.6 percent of the collection, 1217 works of figures, 453 works of nature, 424 works of city and 336 works are classified as abstract when examined in terms of theme maintenance. The oldest artist was born in 1814 and the youngest artist was born in 2000, 84 percent of the artists in the collection are alive. This feature also makes the Taviloglu Collection stand out as a living collection.

We are visiting the collection with the theme of “The People We Know” at Istanbul Feshane accompanied by Yasemin Yemişçi, one of Marcus Graf's assistants.

ART MEETING

475. At our art meeting, Chiharu Shiota will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Japan-Turkey diplomatic relations. as part of the year, we are visiting his solo exhibition “Between the Worlds”, which was organized at the invitation of Istanbul Modern Dec.

While Deconstructing the conceptual framework of the exhibition, Shiota draws on Istanbul's position between Asia and Europe. It is also inspired by the location of Istanbul Modern in Karaköy, which has been one of the busiest districts of the city for centuries and includes its historical port. The artist establishes a relationship between the ships that dock and leave the port, the passengers traveling on these ships and their stories and the story of his migration from Japan to Germany. Dec.

The artist, who wrapped the entire exhibition hall with net-like red threads in his installation at Istanbul Modern, emphasizes the theme of “existence in absence” by placing the suitcases inside this mass. Red, the most commonly used color of the artist, represents the blood in the veins and the flow of life, while metaphorically connecting people, emotions and memories. Each of the suitcases in the placement represents a person for Shiota. Suitcases connected to each other with red ropes create a visual context that makes the viewer question both personal and collective themes such as home, belonging and identity. Thus, the artist wants the viewer to have a physical and emotional relationship with the work in order to complete the work by adding the concepts of time, space, movement, memory to his installation. Suitcases are used as symbols that carry emotions and memories beyond the objects they carry in them, and emphasize the past and the future.

The exhibition ”Between Worlds" feeds on the cosmopolitan identity of Istanbul and the artist's own migration story, while Deconstructing a contemplative space where viewers can think about their own lives, memories and relationships within a more universal definition of humanity. Thus, the universe created by Shiota using threads not only offers a visually impressive space, but also acts as an invitation for a person to explore the labyrinth of his inner world.

Chiharu Shiota, who redefined the concepts of memory and consciousness by collecting ordinary objects such as shoes, keys, beds, chairs and clothes and wrapping them with huge structures made of yarn, was born in Osaka in 1972. Continuing her studies in Berlin, Shiota explores the feeling of "existing in absence" with her installations, while in her sculptures, drawings, performance videos, photographs and canvases, she reveals the abstract feelings she associates with human existence.

ART MEETING

474.In our art meeting, we are visiting the exhibition of German painter, printmaker and sculptor Georg Baselitz, one of the leading names of contemporary art, at the Sakip Sabancı Museum.

Baselitz, who has had a profound influence on the international art world since 1980, will be the 20th. In the second half of the century, he shaped a new identity for German art; in response to the trauma and tragedy of the Second World War, he developed a unique and distinctive artistic style. For the artist, who has been painting his compositions upside down since 1969, this approach has been a way to Deconstruct the form from content and stand somewhere between abstraction and figuration. At the same time, it made it possible for him to make a new opening in the traditional technique of painting on canvas.

Georg Baselitz: The Last Decade consists of stable motives that have become evident in the artist's work over the years. Baselitz's eagles, which have been covered in various techniques since the 1950s and remind of his childhood spent at Deutschbaselitz, return in a series embroidered on blue backgrounds. The last painting of the series dated 2024 meets the visitor for the first time in this exhibition. In the same way, the deer motif, which he has been painting since childhood, reappears as part of the mythological iconography that has guided his works since the beginning of his career. While the Golden Hands series reflects the artist's admiration for the cultural and historical symbolism of these limbs, the upside-down portraits of his wife Elke are also included in the exhibition as one of his frequent subjects since the 1970s. The highlight of the exhibition, the Springtime [Spring] series, is inspired by the Dada collage artist Hannah Höch. In this series, Baselitz reveals an almost fetishistic meaning by collaging real nylon stockings over his upside-down figures. The monumental sculptures exhibited in the galleries and garden of the museum also form a unity with the iconography and historical themes of the paintings. We are visiting the exhibition accompanied by the museum's guide.

ART MEETING

473.During our art meeting, we are visiting the Mosaic Museum located in Kazlıçeşme Sanat.

Kazlıçeşme Sanat underwent restoration between 2015-2018 Dec. During the restoration, a mosaic belonging to the Late Roman – Early Byzantine period was found on the floor. The mosaic, which was found to be largely intact, has been reported to the Directorate of Istanbul Archaeological Museums. With the decision of on-site protection, it has been covered with glass and made suitable for exhibition. The mosaic is important because it is the largest example found outside the city wall in Istanbul. Considering that the figure continues outside the building, an application has been made to the Directorate of Istanbul Archaeological Museums.

As a result of the excavation carried out under the supervision of the directorate, the entire mosaic was reached in 2019. a burial chamber, a sarcophagus and skeletons were also found in the area in 2021. In order to be a new witness for the history of Istanbul, this space has been transformed into the Mosaic Museum. In the center of the polychrome mosaic panel made with the Opus tessellatum technique, there is an octagram main motif placed in a circle with a wave and mesh motif border, and the composition is enriched by a combination of interlocking knot motifs surrounding this main form, a triangle and a square surrounded by parallel edges.

In the central circle in the octagram, a floral motif has been created with triangles on which green, brown, orange, purple colors are preferred on a light background. Among the knot motifs found on the exterior of the main composition are Decals of kantharos, ivy, lotus flower, four-petaled flower, and after the knot motifs, another composition consisting of eight-pointed star motifs was switched to. Suleyman knot Decals are used in the square shaped areas between the star motifs and reveal a rich appearance. We will make our visit accompanied by a museum guide.
